Experienced Bus Driver

Ready for a new route? Bring your experience to GVB. As a bus driver, you play an important part in Amsterdam’s public transport network and help keep the city connected with every journey.

Help keep Amsterdam connected

A packed bus. Over the announcement system, you ask passengers to move further down the aisle. The doors close. You check your mirrors and set off. From quiet neighbourhoods to busy city streets. The morning rush hour, an open bridge, a tight corner or a double-parked van. Whatever you come across, you know how to handle it. People from across Amsterdam travel on your bus. You feel at home in the busy city, surrounded by people. Your job is to get every passenger to their destination safely, comfortably and on time.

What we offer

You look after our passengers, so we make sure you are well looked after too. Here is what you can expect:

  • A starting salary of at least €2,745 gross per month based on a 36-hour working week, depending on your experience. Over time, this can increase to €3,729.
  • Generous shift allowances.
  • A 13th-month payment, 8% holiday allowance and an additional 3.5% sustainable employability payment.
  • A good pension with ABP, with GVB paying two-thirds of the contribution.
  • Free, unlimited travel on all GVB services, including in your free time. Your family can travel at a reduced rate.
  • An average of 21 days’ annual leave, with the option to buy additional leave.
  • Additional leave hours instead of Good Friday and 1 May.
  • A monthly contribution of €84.91 towards your health insurance.
  • Free public transport to and from work. If public transport is not available when your shift starts or ends, you will receive a travel allowance of €0.23 per kilometre.

Fully paid training

During a 10-week, full-time training course, you will learn the routes across Amsterdam and how we work at GVB. GVB covers the full cost of your training, and you will be paid from day one. Once you have completed the course, you can also work part-time.

Contract, hours and shifts

  • Contract: If you work 24 hours or more per week, you can join GVB directly. You will receive a one-year contract, with the prospect of a permanent position. If you work fewer than 24 hours per week, you will be employed through an agency.
  • Hours: If you have less than two years’ experience, your contract will include up to 32 guaranteed hours per week. If you have two years’ experience or more, this can be up to 36 hours. You can work additional hours if you wish.
  • Shifts: You will work a range of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays. You will receive your work schedule well in advance. A shift lasts no longer than 8 hours and 45 minutes.

What we’re looking for

You are friendly and welcoming, enjoy meeting different people and always put safety first. Being punctual matters to you, and your experience means you feel confident driving in Amsterdam’s busy traffic. You also:

  • Have a valid Category D driving licence and experience as a bus driver.
  • Have Driver CPC or are willing to renew or obtain it again.
  • Have at least secondary vocational education level 3, or an equivalent level of education.
  • Speak, read and understand Dutch well.
  • Are at least 18 years old and between 1.65 and 2 metres tall.
  • Can see colours and signals clearly, with glasses or contact lenses if needed.
  • Are available full-time for at least 10 weeks during the training course.
  • Can work a range of shifts and use your own transport to travel to different starting locations.
  • Are eligible for a certificate of good conduct, known in Dutch as a Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag, or VOG.

Your team

As a bus driver, you spend much of your working day on the road by yourself. But you are never on your own. A whole team is there to support you, including traffic controllers, planners, team managers and your fellow bus drivers. You will regularly see your colleagues along the way and during breaks at bus terminals across the city.

Colleagues sometimes describe GVB as a village. People know each other, remember your name and are always ready to help.
